Going beyond greed: 4 I’s for India
The Times od India
December 28, 2012

Corporate greed & corruption as witnessed in the 1.76 lakh crore 2G scam, which involved many large businesses last year, only got bigger this year with a host of other cases grabbing the limelight. Be it the much bigger 1.86 lakh crore coal scam, charges of bending rules by DLF, Reebok or allegations of spending money in lobbying first by Walmart and then by another dozen MNCs in India... the list kept getting bigger. TOI spoke to several CEOs, and those who teach them, on the issue of corporate greed and asked them for ways to address the issue at hand. Here's the take of four of the brightest minds in the world of business and academia on the subject of corporate greed...

It is easy to rail against greed, especially because, as Milton Friedman once deadpanned, "None of us are greedy, it's only the other fellow who's greedy." He went on to observe that "The world runs on individuals pursuing their separate interests." The implications are that, as a descriptive matter, the pursuit of profit drives most businesses' behavior most of the time — and that the primary challenge is to harness this drive for constructive purposes whenever possible rather than simply decrying it.

Connectivité mondiale : la crise ralentit la globalisation
Commerce International
December 24, 2012

Going backwards
The Economist
December 22, 2012

HOW integrated countries are with the rest of the world varies more than you might expect. And the world is less integrated in 2012 than it was back in 2007. These are the conclusions of the latest DHL Global Connectedness Index, which found that the Netherlands is the most globalised of 140 countries (see chart), just ahead of Singapore; landlocked Burundi is the least. (North Korea was not ranked.)

The index measures both the depth of a country’s connectedness (ie, how much of its economy is internationalised) and its breadth (how many countries it connects with). The economic crisis of 2008 made connections both shallower and narrower. The depth measure has rebounded since 2009, and is now 10% higher than it was in 2005—though it remains below what it was in 2007. But the breadth of connectedness has continued to slip, and is now 4% lower than in 2005.

Forget globalisation – it’s regional connections that are key
Financial Times
December 19, 2012

Globalisation isn’t as simple – or as flat – as you might think. It’s uneven and has been knocked by the financial crisis. In some ways, the world is becoming less globally connected and more regionally-orientated, in contrast to most assumptions.

That’s the findings of the global connectivity index created by academics from the IESE Business School, which sheds light on the current state of globalisation with interesting results.

The standard globalisation thesis posits the limitless movement of capital and information and the inexorable weakening of national boundaries and identities – and this school of thought remains as strong as it ever was at the height of the ‘new economy’ mania.

Marchantlezing: World 3.0 Rethinking Globalization
D66
December 18, 2012

World 3.0: Global prosperity and how to achieve it.

Southen
December 18, 2012

Semana Económica
December 18th

A constant strand with the Tatas has been proving Indians can match foreigners in everything.
Few could have predicted the boldness with which the Tata Group, once given the opportunity to do so, would stride on to the global scene. By 2003, the year TCS crossed the $1 billion revenue mark and three years after Tata Tea acquired Tetley, international revenues amounted to 24 per cent of the group’s earnings. By 2012, international revenues had increased to 58 per cent. With the United States and United Kingdom as its largest foreign markets, the group bridged the divide between the world’s advanced economies and emerging markets.

– Nadchodziły chude lata, a my chcieliśmy sprawdzić, jaki jest potencjał rozwoju światowej gospodarki – deklaruje Frank Appel, prezes DP DHL. Wnioski były zaskakujące.

– Teoria płaskiego świata nie jest prawdziwa. Odległości i granice ciągle mają znaczenie – mówi Pankaj Ghemawat z Uniwersytetu Nawarry, współautor indeksu.

Second DHL Global Connectedness Index reveals globalization remains lower than pre-crisis peak, challenges total globalization myth and calls for greater connectedness to address economic stagnation

HONG KONG, Dec. 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The second DHL Global Connectedness Index( http://www.dhl.com/gci ) (GCI) has revealed that Hong Kong's economy tops the charts worldwide in terms of the depth (Note 1) of its connectedness, but ranks only 78th in breadth (Note 2). Overall, the combined scores place Hong Kong 12th globally in global connectedness and 2nd within East Asia & Pacific. The top three markets in the East Asia & Pacific ranking are, in descending order, Singapore, Hong Kong and South Korea.

Hong Kong continues to perform well in the trade pillar, reflecting its role as an export gateway for mainland China -- note the greater breadth of Hong Kong's merchandise exports than its merchandise imports. In 2011, Hong Kong exported goods worth 187% of its GDP and exported services worth 50% of its GDP. 69% of Hong Kong's merchandise exports went to destinations within East Asia & Pacific, even though East Asia & Pacific makes up only 25% of the world economy.

Megtorpant a globalizáció
Index
December 3, 2012

A kutatás a globális kapcsolódások vizsgálatakor négy tényezőt elemzett.

Sverige på topp 10 i DHL Global Connectedness Index
My News Desk
December 3, 2012

B-school professors: Leading the way in 2012
MBA Channel
November 30, 2012

The U.S. based website Poets & Quants has published a different kind of ranking. They haven’t chosen the best b-schools, but instead paid tribute to some of the best b-school teachers. Amongst them are a few legends of the academic community like Harvard’s Clayton Christensen, Wharton’s Jeremy Siegel, Stanford’s Jeffrey Pfeffer, Dartmouth’s Vijay Govindarajan, NYU’s Aswath Damodaran, Duke’s Peter Ubel, and London Business School’s Lynda Gratton.

One of the professors on the list is Pankaj Ghemawat, who now teaches strategy at Spain's IESE Business School. Indian-born Ghemawat entered Harvard College at the age of 16 and started his Ph.D. programme at the age of 19. With 23 years he taught his first lecture being considerably younger than most of his students at the time. In 1991, he was appointed the youngest full professor in the history of the business school. Since 2006, Ghemawat teaches at IESE Business School in Barcelona.

Nederland opnieuw meest geglobaliseerde land
NT
November 29, 2012

 ‘We’re less connected,’ says DHL
Air Cargo World
November 29, 2012

The world is less globally connected today than it was in 2007, claims DHL in the second edition of its “Global Connectedness Index,” which measures international flows of trade, capital, information and people. From the baseline year of 2005, DHL concludes that global connectedness grew robustly to 2007, and then dropped sharply at the onset of the financial crisis.

Despite modest gains since 2009, the world has not yet regained its pre-crisis peak level of connectedness, according to the study. “The GCI 2012 indicates that today’s volatile and uncertain business environment bears the lasting impact of the financial crisis,” said Frank Appel, CEO of Deutsche Post DHL.

Česko má stále vazby z dob Svaté říše římské, říká uznávaný ekonom
E15
November 29, 2012

Track Connectedness Today to Deliver a Better Tomorrow
DHL November 28, 2012

Deutsche Post DHL´s Delivering Tomorrow: Logistics 2050 report looks deep into the future and poses a range of scenarios varying with respect to, among other factors, how connected the future will be across borders and distance. There is strong evidence, some presented in the DHL Global Connectedness Index 2012, that a more connected world would be far more prosperous and pass along to future generations a host of cultural and other non-economic benefits.

Recent trends since the onset of the financial crisis are not encouraging. The DHL Global Connectedness Index measures the depth and breadth of the world’s trade, capital, information, and people flows, incorporating more than one million data points from 2005 up to the present. Global Connectedness was growing up to 2007, declined sharply from 2007 to 2009, and despite modest gains since then remains significantly below its 2007 peak.

November 26, 2012

Catalonia and cartography - Trading places
The Economist
November 23, 2012

HOW to show the value of freedom—specifically, its costs? The Spanish region of Catalonia goes to the polls on November 25th for an election that is seen as an unofficial vote over whether to separate into its own political entity. This inspired Pankaj Ghemawat, a business guru at IESE Business School in Barcelona, to produce proportional maps showing what an independent Catalonia's trade would look like to Europe and other regions of Spain, if they were autonomous too (see chart).

“Since March, I have seen a 20 per cent fall in demand. Next year energy prices go up – and energy costs are already 25 per cent of my total.”

In already uncertain times, the debate over Catalonia’s independence from Spain might be seen as yet another headache for Catalan businesses. But Mr Pedret, a lifelong “independentista”, is upbeat.

The cost of freedom
The Economist
November 23, 2012

WHAT is the price of liberty? Independence has a cost, as Catalans may appreciate following an election on November 25th that is seen as an unofficial vote on whether the region should separate from Spain.

One way to understand what is at stake is to consider what an independent Catalonia would mean in terms of its trade with its neighbors. Here, Pankaj Ghemawat, a business thinker at IESE Business School in Barcelona, has cleverly weighed in. He has produced proportional maps of the world, showing Catalonia's "exports" to other regions inside Spain, as if they were autonomous too, and to elsehwhere in Europe (see chart below).

Fail!
The Economist
November 20, 2012

THE extent to which business schools and, in particular, their MBA graduates, played a role in the various corporate and economic crises of this century has been talked over so often it has become tiresome. It sometimes feels as if business schools can be a little too keen to take responsibility for such things; by doing so they at least feel they prove they are relevant. But more likely, those who reach the top of the corporate tree—whether an MBA or not—are just of a certain type: ruthless, focused on the money and with a particular worldview. A year or two on an MBA programme in their late 20s is unlikely to have a significant effect on their morality. Despite business schools’ protestations, such people tend not to be malleable. And schools can only work with the quality of material they put in.

The "flat-world" yarn falls flat in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts' globalization exhibit
Daily Planet
November 7, 2012

What can one say of an exhibit theme that is based on a book scholars have dismissed as culturally misinformed, propaganda, intellectually impoverished and shockingly ignorant of history?

Thomas Friedman’s “The World Is Flat: A Brief History Of The Twenty-first Century” is the inspiration for the eight-part exhibit, “Art in the Age of Globalization,” at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MIA). The exhibit deserves mild applause but, apart from being a native son, Friedman has little to recommend him as muse.

Do Mobile Entrepreneurs Live in a World Without Borders, or Is It All 'Globaloney'?
The Huffington Post
October 31, 2012

How relevant are national borders today? David Livingstone famously wrote in the 1850s that the innovation of railroads, steamships and telegraphs make the world one -- national borders melt away and Africa could basically be integrated into Europe. The more modern version of those modes of connection -- the plane, telephone, Internet -- seem on the surface only to demonstrate the truth of Livingstone's vision. We can be chatting with people on the other side of the world pretty much instantly, we can physically traverse the world in a few hours, what affects one part of the world inevitably affects the rest of us, and access to modes of connection is soaring, including for many of the world's poorest people. Such global integration is no longer a novelty, or a luxury of the rich; it seems like it's business as usual for increasing proportions of the world's population.

Q&A with Pankaj Ghemawat
360 Steelcase
October 24, 2012

Pankaj Ghemawat was born in Jodhpur, India, educated at Harvard, teaches global strategy at IESE Business School in Barcelona, and consults with businesses around the world. In his new book, “World 3.0: Global Prosperity and How to Achieve It”, he argues that contrary to another bestselling book the world is not flat, that local culture, geography, and borders still drive individual and corporate behavior.
Q: In “World 3.0”, you explain how globalization is far less advanced than many believe.
The truth is in the data. Only 1% of postal mail crosses national borders. Less than 2% of phone calls involve international calls. Just 18% of all internet traffic is routed across national borders. On Facebook, 85% of friends are domestic. Then take a hot topic like trade. Some people say the U.S. consumes so many products made in China that that the country could cure its unemployment problem just by cutting imports from China. In reality, the percentage of U.S. personal consumption expenditures accounted for by products from China is between 1.3% and 2%.

Strategies for Global Connectedness
Strategy + Business
October 22, 2012

Not that long ago, the world was supposed to be flat. Hardly a day passed without references to globalization and “borderless markets.” This led many policymakers and business leaders to jump on the bandwagon of open globalization, treating all interconnection among countries as equally beneficial.

But this perception that “the world is flat” was so exaggerated that it is fair to call it “globaloney.” The last few years — of financial crises, weak growth, and mounting protectionist pressures — have demonstrated that the world is far less connected than it appeared to be. The real world is roughly only 10 to 25 percent globalized. Most of the activities that could take place either across or within national borders are still domestic, and the international flows that exist vary widely among countries, industries, and types of business interactions.

Indian economy is set to perform – regardless of BJP-CPM
Hindustan Times
September 24, 2012

If you ignore, for a moment, the ideological and strangely opportunistic protests by the BJP-CPM combine, you will find that in the long run they are irrelevant. Recent studies of high growth economies show that although the Indian economy took a hit from the global financial crisis, it is on course to becoming the 3rd largest economy in just over 20 years.
According to an Ernst and Young study of 25 rapid growth markets (RGM), India was the 10th largest economy in 2011 and will become the 3rd largest in 2035. In 2011, the 3rd largest was Japan. In 2035, Japan will rank 4th. However, the study confirms what a lot of others have forecast about the Indian economy for this year – that it will be “relatively subdued.”

Globaloney: Why We May Not Be as Global as We Think
The Wall Street Journal
September 23, 2012

In his latest research, Professor Pankaj Ghemawat of IESE business school in Spain, suggests that firms are missing out on growth opportunities and the chance to recruit the best global talent.

He argues that perceptions of a globalized world are far greater than the data predicts. He says that companies like HSBC and BMW are more locally based than they claim. His research shows that most companies trade with a narrow group of countries and usually with those that share a common language

Not That Flat: Pankaj Ghemawhat Challenges Globalization's Adherents
Arabic Knowledge@Wharton
September 4, 2012

Globalization is a catchall term used to explain much of contemporary economic and
social developments, from the prevalence of outsourcing to the popularity of fusion
cuisine. But economist and professor Pankaj Ghemawhat argues that a dive into different data reveals that much of the world is not as connected as it is portrayed to be.
He makes that argument in his book, World 3.0: Global Prosperity and How to Achieve
It, and challenged the audience at the recent TED Global Conference in Edinburgh,
Scotland, to measure the number of foreign Facebook friends they had. The percentages, he pointed out, usually turn out to be lower than what people expect.

How national borders impede global trade
The Globe and Mail
August 24, 2012

Excerpted from World 3.0: Global Prosperity and How to Achieve it by Pankaj Ghemawat.

The Mystery of the Missing Trade

The U.S.-Canadian border is the world's longest undefended border. Trade across it accounts for the world's largest bilateral trading relationship, still larger than that between the United States and China. Two-way trade between the United States and Canada amounted to nearly $750-billion in 2008 before falling to $600-billion in 2009, thanks largely to the decline in energy prices and weakness in the auto sector; in both areas, Canada is the United States' largest foreign supplier. So important is this trading relationship for Canada that the Canadian government regards several industries as more susceptible to U.S. economic conditions than to domestic ones. Thus, Canada's $100-billion drop in exports to the United States between 2008 and 2009 was three times as large as the decline in Canada's GDP during that period.

From Canada with Candy

Let's dig deeper into the mystery of the missing trade by returning to the U.S.-Canadian border and focusing on a specific business trying to sell products across the border. Despite the general fascination with markets, businesses are, in many respects, the visible hand of trade. As international economist Edward Leamer observes (in the course of a critique of World 2.0): There are very few exchanges that are mediated by "markets" . . . Most exchanges take place within the context of long-term relationships that create the language needed for buyer and seller to communicate, that establish the trust needed to carry out the exchange, that allow ongoing servicing of implicit or explicit guarantees, that monitor the truthfulness of both parties, and that punish those who mislead. Many exchanges occur between colleagues who work for the same firm. Indeed, about 40 per cent of US imports are carried out internal to multinational enterprises.

The Economy's New Rules: Go Glocal
Time
August 20, 2012

If there's a single company that illustrates the huge range of opportunities and challenges facing the U.S. economy today, it might be Caterpillar, the heavy-machinery giant based in Peoria, Ill. Like most other firms, Cat took a hit following the financial crisis. But since then, it's bounced back--and how. After a strong second quarter, the firm is on track for a second record-breaking year in a row and will likely sell $70 billion of its famous yellow earthmovers, tractors and mining equipment globally.

As products roll off the line at the recently expanded East Peoria factory, every one is marked with a flag that designates its final destination. There are a lot of Chinese, Indian and Australian flags. But there are plenty of American ones too, and their numbers are growing. "We put those flags on a few years back. I wanted our workers to understand that globalization isn't necessarily about someone taking your job," says Caterpillar CEO Doug Oberhelman. Indeed, Caterpillar thinks less about a single world market than many regional ones. The company is global, but where it can, it sources and produces locally, which is a natural hedge against everything from oil prices to currency risk to changing customer tastes. The bottom line: jobs and growth are split more or less equally between the U.S. and the rest of the world.

A World Not as Global as We Thought
IESE Alumni Blog
July 12, 2012

How globalized is the world we live in? Is it true that barriers between countries and regions are evaporating, like so many experts say?

IESE Prof. Pankaj Ghemawat was one of the first scholars to swim against a current which gained momentum following the publication of the book, The World is Flat, by Thomas Friedman in 2005.

Pankaj argued that the world is not flat, at least not yet, based on solid data on business and consumer behavior around the world. He concluded that countries and companies should take advantage of similarities, as well as differences, among regions to grow.

When presenting data that support his hypothesis, Pankaj likes to first conduct a small experiment with his audience to find out how much they know about globalization.

Reinventing Spain's economy
Fortune
July 10, 2012

As Europe's leaders attend one emergency meeting after another, the political high drama shouldn't make us lose sight of the fact that if the debt crisis is to be solved, Southern European companies need to change how they compete. Nowhere is that more evident than in Spain, whose elites fret over interest rates while protesters in the streets call for closing the borders and a return to barter.

Almost no one there is talking about how to make the real economy more productive. According to our research with IESE Business School colleague Bruno Cassiman, Spanish labor productivity (real output per worker) went up by only 15% between 1990 and 2010, vs. 25% in Northern Europe. Meanwhile Spanish costs per worker went up by 120%, vs. 60% in Northern Europe. That means labor costs per unit produced in Spain rose three times faster than in Northern Europe -- the region that includes its two largest trading partners, France and Germany. Italy and Greece have fallen behind the productivity curve as well.

What it takes to develop effective global leaders
The Globe and Mail
July 8, 2012

In an increasingly globalized business world, we need global leaders. But Pankaj Ghemawat, a professor of strategic management at ESE Business School in Barcelona, says the skills those leaders need has been confused by misconceptions about globalization, and the fact that too many of the experts pronouncing on the topics are simply adapting their traditional leadership ideas to global leadership.

In the McKinsey Quarterly, he tackles five misconceptions:

Think small

While globalization is a powerful force, the extent of international integration varies widely across countries and companies and generally is more limited than is commonly supposed. Only 10 per cent to 25 per cent of the flow of trade, capital, information and people actually cross national borders – and even that movement is weakened significantly by geographic distance and national differences.

Morning Advantage: How to Build Worldly Leaders
HBR Blog
July 4, 2012

As companies struggle to develop a new generation of internationally competent leaders, many are turning to localization instead. Hiring and grooming local talent in key markets makes plenty of sense, but as IESE Business School professor Pankaj Ghemawat explains in McKinsey Quarterly, firms that rely so heavily on localization that they no longer groom expatriates are being shortsighted.

"Giving up on expatriation implies giving up on building the diverse bench of global leaders that CEOs say they require," he writes. "Global leaders need experience working for extended periods in foreign locations because living abroad creates permanent knowledge and ties that bind." Ghemawat encourages firms to rotate executives through overseas assignments — not just travel. "And don’t make the mistake of viewing expatriation as being solely about sending people from headquarters to emerging markets. The same requirement for immersion outside of one’s home market also applies to the cultivation of global leaders recruited in emerging markets."

Quelques petites choses entendues à TEDGlobal
Le Monde Blog
July 2, 2012

To Secede or Not to Secede: The Case of Europe
The Globalist
July 2, 2012

According to one source, as many as ten new countries will be created in Europe over the course of the 21st century. This prediction suggests that the argument linking globalization and secession — that borders no longer impede trade and so secession imposes little or no economic costs — has a special appeal. But does this proposition really hold up to scrutiny?

In Europe, the argument usually articulated by separatists goes beyond globalization. The argument is bolstered by claims that integration at the level of the European Union, paired with the devolution of power from national to regional governments, has further eroded the power of national borders. In other words, the established nation-states in Europe are squeezed both from above and below.

Today everyone is getting their news and information from Twitter. At Business Insider, it's how we get a lot of our story ideas.

Upsides and downsides of openness — the view from TEDGlobal
Nature News Blog
June 29, 2012

Let’s start with the bad news. With every technological development that helps to make the world a better place, criminals and terrorists are out there to apply it to their own ends. Hence the use of satellite communications and a high-tech operations centre that allowed the Mumbai terrorists in 2008 to track and maximize their massacre of 172 men, women and children; hence the encrypted national communications infrastructure constructed by Mexican drugs barons; hence the threat of synthetic viruses…

This bad news was the subject of a TED talk at the TEDGlobal meeting in Edinburgh, UK, earlier this week. Yet even this pessimistic vision from global-security futurist Marc Goodman led to a positively open conclusion: get the details out there, he said, and let the crowds source solutions. “We need participatory security,” he said. “Public safety is too important to be left to the professionals.”

Brasil deve priorizar reformas necessárias, diz economista indiano
Agencia de Notícias Jornal Floripa
June 28, 2012

How Your Lack Of Foreign Facebook Friends Points To The Truth About Globalization
Forbes
June 27, 2012

How globalized is our world, really? Author and IESE Business School professor Pankaj Ghemawat has gained some academic notoriety of late because he thinks it’s not quite as interconnected — or flat — as we think. His 2007 article for the Harvard Business Review, “The World is Not Flat,” rejected the ideas proposed by Thomas Friedman that the Internet and market forces had helped “ flatten” the world, and eroded the importance of national boundaries.

RIL, Infosys and Bharti Airtel struggle to find the 'next big thing'
The Economic Times

MUMBAI: Each has its unique set of woes, some of which are reflective of an economic slowdown and inconsistency and inertia in policy making. Still, when it comes to India's Big Three - Reliance Industries (RIL), Infosys Technologies and Bharti Airtel - management consultants feel their problem could be a fundamental one: that these bellwethers may not have enough strategic and innovative steam to find 'the next big thing'; and have become vulnerable given the swift changes across several fronts from technology to demographics.

Infosys' growth pangs: Founders need to let go of their continuing influence?
The Economics Time
May 15, 2012

Ask any Infosys executive to identify the malady that ails the company and the reply is reminiscent of the immortal Upanishadic phrase 'neti neti'. Much like the sage Yajnavalkya who said God is 'neti, neti', or 'not this, not this', the Infosys management believes that its troubles are neither this nor that.

For more than a year now, one preoccupation of those associated with the software industry has been to identify the nature of the Bangalorebased company's ailment. There are many theories, all of which seem plausible but mostly explain the symptoms, and not so much as diagnose the disease.

Companies create low-cost products for India, also ship them to markets abroad
The Economic Times
April 13, 2012

Innovation in India used to be largely about developing products for personal consumption and cheaper no-frills versions of existing devices. Many were developed only to be shipped to global markets. Now, led by the country's technological capabilities and buoyed by the burgeoning middle class, companies across sectors such as white goods, mobile handsets, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, and services like healthcare and telecom, are rolling out innovations. And the big change is that the products are targeted at the domestic consumer and for those at the bottom of the pyramid.

'India's integration with the world is limited'

India should focus on how many are living below the poverty line instead of comparing the growth rate with the rest of the world, says an economist and global strategist.

AVRUPA BİRLİĞİ’NDEN TÜRKİYE’NİN UZAKLAŞMASI FİZİBİL DEĞİL
Fener Haber
March 16, 2012

DHL 'superhub' our global connection
Cincinnati.com
March 14, 2012

Leipzig’s got one, Hong Kong’s got one, and Cincinnati does, too.

Cincinnati completes the trio of so-called “super hubs” – the backbone of the DHL global logistics network. So what makes the hub at CVG a super one?

Location, location, location. Cincinnati is only a one-hour flight to two-thirds of the entire U.S. population. From here, DHL connects to every part of the country, as well as to Canada and Latin America. Cincinnati also has daily direct connections to Europe, the Middle East and Asia. And that’s just the beginning.

The CVG hub is responsible for processing 2.6 million pieces of shipments a month, 92 percent of our U.S. shipments, as well as the majority of Canadian, Mexican, and Latin American shipments. We anticipate 10 to 15 percent more shipments to move through CVG this year.

Troubles in Talent Management in China
Human Resource Executive Online
March 14, 2012

Across industry sectors, multinational companies face a common obstacle in developing the Chinese market -- attracting, developing and retaining the local Chinese talent needed to accomplish this goal. Compensation and cultural norms in the rapidly growing economy are particular sticking points.

Developing the Chinese market is a top priority for many multinational companies. Across industry sectors, however, they face a common obstacle -- attracting, developing and retaining the local Chinese talent needed to accomplish this goal.

Global firms realize the importance of having local leadership in tune with the idiosyncrasies and rapid shifts of the Chinese market.

In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Pierre Cohade, the Asia-Pacific president of Goodyear, confirmed that the No. 1 challenge in China "is absolutely the fight for talent." Goodyear is hardly alone: Over the past 13 years, the American Chamber of Commerce has conducted annual surveys of U.S. companies in China and frequently cites management-level human resource constraints as the top business challenge.

World 3.0: Not as globalised as we think
Think Business
March 9, 2012

For many years we have been hearing that the world is flat and that countries are becoming increasingly integrated with one another. The rapid rise of the internet, easy travel and cheap telecommunications make it easy to believe that we live in a completely globalised world.

But Pankaj Ghemawat, Professor of Global Strategy at IESE Business School in Barcelona, begs to differ from this dominant worldview. In his 2011 book, World 3.0: Global Prosperity and How to Achieve It, he looks at the hard evidence and argues the world is not as globalised as we think it is. At best, he says, it is semi-globalised, while distance – in the geographical, cultural and other senses, remains highly relevant and will continue to do so.

The world is bumpy
Ernst & Young
February, 2012

Betting the future on rapid-growth markets simply because they have the right economic and demographic conditions is not enough, however large and promising they may be. “If you’re investing in these markets just because there are lots of Chinese or Indians, that’s not exactly proprietary insight,”says Pankaj Ghemawat, Anselmo Rubiralta Professor of Global Strategy at IESE Business School and author of World 3.0: Global Prosperity and How to Achieve It (Harvard Business Press Books, 2011.) “Yet this is still the overarching strategic rationale behind many companies’ plans. My prescription is that companies must pay careful attention to identifying the differences between these markets and those with which they are more familiar — and figure out strategies for addressing those differences.”

Globalisation risks challenge executives
CGMA Magazine
February 29, 2012

By Sabine Vollmer
Increasing competition and slowing growth can turn emerging economies such as China, India and Brazil into risky business environments, according to a new Ernst & Young report on globalisation.

Forty-six percent of respondents in E&Y’s latest globalisation survey, “The World Is Bumpy: Globalization and New Strategies for Growth,” believed China’s economy will slow dramatically over the next five years, and 49% agreed that the cost of investing in rapid-growth markets has been much higher than expected. Still, doing business in these markets is critical for their companies to increase revenue and profits, 74% of survey respondents said.

So what’s an executive to do?

“My prescription is that companies must pay careful attention to identifying the differences between these markets and those with which they are more familiar – and figure out strategies for addressing those differences,” Pankaj Ghemawat, professor of global strategy at the Spanish IESE Business School, said in the report.

Somos menos globalizados do que pensamos
AESE Escola de Direcção e Negócios

February 28, 2012

Catalonia's quest for greater autonomy
DW Deutsche Welle
February 17, 2012

Scotland’s planned referendum on independence has inspired an upsurge of nationalist sentiment in the Spanish region of Catalonia. Spain's financial crisis is proving a potent engine for the Catalan demands.

Catalonia's national identity was repressed when Spain was a dictatorship. Soon after Spain's transition to democracy following Franco's death in 1975, powers were devolved to the nationalist government in Barcelona. But Spain's richest region was left was a sense of economic grievance - even today, Catalonia pays around 8 percent more of its GDP to Madrid in taxes than it gets back in public spending.

Now, Catalonia's best-known politician, Jordi Pujol, has his eye on Scotland, where Alex Salmond, leader of the Scottish National Party recently announced plans to hold a referendum on independence - probably including an option for greater devolved powers for the Scottish parliament.

DHL releases Global Connectedness Index 2011
The Automotive Horizon
January 25, 2012

DHL, the global logistics leader, released the first DHL Global Connectedness Index (GCI) 2011 a detailed country-by-country analysis of the flows that connect the world. GCI ranks 125 countries and examines the depth and breadth of a country’s integration as manifested by its participation in international flows of products and services, capital, information and people. The study documents that global connectedness has enormous room to expand, even among the most 'connected' countries and that continued economic integration could spur global gross domestic product gains of five percent or more.
Indian context
The overall GCI places equal weight on both depth and breadth. While India is a top scorer with its breadth of coverage, ranking 12, in terms of depth, the country is far less connected at 110. Overall, India ranks 49 in the study.

Visumregler koster 500 milliarder kroner om året
Politiken
January 15, 2012

Adjust your global compass

Mannaz' International Newsletter
January 6, 2012

Many of our assumptions of globalisation are formed by personal bias and public opinions that are expressed without substantiated data. As a result, executives lean towards dangerously flawed decision-making too often and pursue global one-size-fits-all strategies. In an interview with Pankaj Ghemawat, one of the world’s most accomplished business professors and global strategists, journalist Kenneth Mikkelsen investigates the current state of globalisation and the implications for executives who have to navigate through the heavy fog of misinformation.

One early morning in 1971, John Lennon sat down at his Steinway piano in the bedroom at Tittenhurst Park, his estate in Ascot, England. Many people would later characterise the outcome of his work that morning as his greatest musical gift to the world. From later interviews it is clear that Lennon already knew that he was writing something special, as the lyrics found their way onto a piece of paper:

“You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one”

The Big Idea. Our Not-So-Flat World
USCIB International Business
Winter 2011-2012

The world is flat, right? Well, consider the following facts:
• Only 20 percent of the world’s equity shares are held by investors outside a company’s home market.
• Just three percent of people live outside their country of birth.
• Less than one percent of all American companies have any foreign operations – and most of them operate in just one country, primarily Canada.
• Worldwide public opinion surveys indicate that people care about their fellow citizens from 100 to 10,000 times more than they do about foreigners.

Pankaj Ghemewat, professor of global strategy at IESE Business School in Barcelona and author of the well received book “World 3.0: Global Prosperity and How to Achieve It,” has thought a lot about this. Ghemewat takes issue with common assumptions about globalization.
